PM to visit Sunamganj Haor areas Sunday

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will go to Sunamganj Sunday to see for herself the sufferings of the people in the flood-affected Haor areas. Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Rafiqul Islam said that the premier would arrive in Shalla Upazila headquarters around 10:30am, BSS reported Saturday. "She will hold a meeting with senior officials of the upazila and then distribute relief materials among the flood-hit people," he said. Hasina will return to the capital in the afternoon. Flash floods, triggered by several days of torrential rain and onrush of water from the upstream, have inundated vast swathes of the north-eastern region and destroyed half-ripen Boro paddy, putting the livelihoods of thousands of farmers at risk. Sunamganj, Sylhet, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Kishoreganj, Netrokona and Brahmanbaria districts have been affected by the floods.
