Road accidents claim 12 lives across country

Seven killed in Panchagarh road accident

At least 12 people have been killed in separate road accidents across the country.

In Panchagarh, At least seven people lost their lives when a bus ran over a three-wheeler on the Panchagarh- Banglabandha Highway in the Magurmari area of Sadar upazila, on Friday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Rafiq, 28, Akbar Ali, 72, Nurima, 65, Labu Islam, 25, Mukti, 19, Makud Hossain, 43, and Nargis Banu, 42, confirmed Superintendent of Police Md Yusuf Ali.

Locals and the eye-witnesses said five of them died on the spot and two others died on the way to hospital after the bus driver took a sharp turn to save a goat on the road.

Panchagarh Fire Service and Civil Defence in-charge Niranjan Sarkar said a number of local people protested blocking the Panchagarh-Banglabandha Highway for at least two hours.

Locals also hurdled brick chips at the law enforcers while they (law enforcers) were trying to disperse them from the highway. The situation was soon brought under control.

At least five others killed in road accidents in other districts

At least five others were killed and 31 injured in road accidents in Noakhali, Dhaka, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, and Dinajpur on the same day.

In Noakhali, at least 13 people were injured after a bus carrying around 40 passengers plunged into a pond at Kaluhazir Pukur area in Subarna Char upazila.

Char Jabbar Police Station OC Sahed Uddin said the incident took place around 7pm and one of the injured were taken to Noakhali General Hospital. The rest were given treatment at a nearby hospital.

In Dhaka, three people, including two cops were injured in a road accident in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area, near Chandrima Udyan.

The injured are: Rampura police station Inspector Masud Pervez, ansar member Akidul Islam and the driver Mohsin, reports UNB.

Injured Inspector Masud Pervez said: “Our car hit a lamp post when a motorbike suddenly took a u-turn in front of us.” 

In a separate incident, father and son were killed and their mother injured when a truck hit their motorbike in the Ruhitpur area of the Keraniganj upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased was Asadul Haque, 40, and Sohan, 6, said Keraniganj model police station OC Shaker Md Jobayer.

In Gaibandha, the driver of a human hauler was killed when a bus pushed the vehicle into a roadside ditch in the Moheshpur area of the Palashbari upazila.

Eye-witnesses said the Rangpur bound bus of Hanif Enterprise overturned after the collision. 15 of the bus passengers were injured, whereas the lone person in the human hauler died on the spot.

The deceased was identified as Md Arif Miya, 19, of the Dhaperhat union in the Sadullapur upazila, confirmed Gobindaganj Highway police station Sub-Inspector Md Shah Alam.

In Nilphamari, a motorcyclist was killed when an oil-tanker hit his motorbike on the Debiganj road of the Domar upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased Gausul Azam Babu, 37, died on the spot when both of the vehicles fell into a roadside pond after the collision, said Domar police station OC Mostafizur Rahman.

In Dinajpur, a woman was killed after a tractor ran her over in the Shagunkhola village of the Nawabganj upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased is Rukhsana Begum, 40, said Nawabganj police station OC Ashok Chouhan.
