The recent flash flood caused by incessant rain over the last few days has inundated nearly standing Boro paddy on about 114,000 hectares of land in four districts of Sylhet division.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Sunamganj is the most affected area in the division. The standing crops on some 57,289 hectares of land in Haor areas went under water.
On the other hand, the crops on 34,379 hectares in Sylhet; 10,277 hectares in Moulvibazar; and 11, 737 hectares in Habiganj have been damaged.

Over 341,000 farmers have become victim of the flood in the division. Of them, 171,870 in Sunamganj; 103,104 in Sylhet; 30,828 in Moulvibazar; and 35,211 in Habiganj are adversely affected.
The DAE officials say Boro paddy was cultivated on 4.76 lakh hectares of land this year in the division with a production target of 2.49 lakh tonnes rice.
Sylhet divisional DAE Deputy Director Dr Mamunur Rashid Sunday said: “We have taken steps to inspire the farmers for cultivating Aus and Aman paddy in the affected areas so that they can overcome the losses soon.”

Asked about the compensation for damaged crops, he said that the higher authorities had been informed of the situation.
Abul Hashem, DAE deputy director of Sylhet district, said that the farmers in the affected areas could do nothing with the damaged crops as they got rotten.
The farmers should be prepared to cultivate Aus, Aman and other seasonal crops immediately after the flood water receded, he added.
