Update : 10 Oct 2019, 02:51 PM

India’s Border Security Force (BSF) yesterday detained three members of Rapid Action battalion (RAB) and two female informants of the elite force from Ashabari border under Brahmanpara upazila, Comilla.

However, BSF returned all five around 5pm through the same border point, 10 hours after their detention following a flag meeting with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), confirmed BGB’s Sangkuchail BOP’s company commander Subedar Nurul Islam.

“They appeared to be sick when we received them,” he added.

The RAB officials were identified as Constables Rigen Barua and Abdul Matin and Sainik Wahedul Islam. All are attached to the second crime prevention company (CPC 2) of RAB 11.

One of the female informants was identified Liza. The other woman was said to be her aunt, but her identity was unavailable when this report was filed.

According to RAB 11 CPC 2 Acting Commander Muhitul Islam, one of their teams, acting on a tip-off, went from Comilla to Ashabari Uttarpara border area, under Shashidal union, to conduct an anti-narcotics raid around 7am yesterday.

During the raid, he said, the three RAB officials and the two informants accidentally crossed over into the Indian side of the border while chasing a group of drug smugglers.

The local Indians caught and beat the five before handing them over to BSF soldiers.

Brahmanpara police station OC Shahjahan Kabir said the RAB officials had mistakenly crossed the border line as it was not clearly marked. “BSF troops detained them even after they identified themselves as members of RAB.

"BSF officials later confirmed us that they had them in custody.”

The flag meeting between BSF and BGB took place around 4pm and the RAB officials were sent back an hour later.
