At least five people were injured when two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League locked horns on the Begum Rokeya University campus in Rangpur.
The chase and counter-chase between the two factions took place on Wednesday night.
Following the clash, Begum Rokeya University unit Chhatra League president Tushar Kibria also declared an indefinite strike on the campus from Thursday, if the university authority fails to detain the attackers and provide security for the students.
Police and witnesses said a feud between followers of former Chattra League leader Faisal Azim Fine and the university’s unit Chhatra League president Tushar Kibria over establishing supremacy on the campus had been going on for some time.
The feud worsened when the two sides locked horns over a program commemorating the 21st August grenade attack day on the campus. That night, followers of Faisal ransacked Kibria’s room in the university’s Bangabandhu hall.
Later, Faisal and three of his followers were jailed for eight days after Kibria filed a case against them. After being freed, Faisal and his followers launched an attack on Kibria and his followers on Wednesday night.
Later, the university’s proctor Atiur Rahman came to the campus and told journalists that a criminal group from outside was trying to create an unstable situation on the campus.
Meanwhile, Begum Rokeya University police outpost in-charge Sub-Inspector Muhibul Islam said the situation on the campus was under control.
