Transport owners and workers have threatened to go on an indefinite strike from September 16 if their two-point demand, including the removal of illegal vehicles from five major roads of the district, is not met by then.
Chuadanga Road Transport Owner-Worker Oikya Parishad came up with the ultimatum from an emergency press conference at its office on Saturday noon.
The other demand of the Oikya Parishad is to launch direct bus service on Chuadanga-Meherpur road.
Oikya Parishad President Habibur Rahman said they have long been demanding the removal of battery-run three-wheelers like ‘Nasimon’, ‘Karimon’, ‘Alamsadu’ and ‘Easybike’ from the five main roads of the district.
Besides, there are High Court directives to stop the plying of such illegal vehicles on regional highways, he said, adding that but the local administration is not taking any action in this connection.
Claiming that the transport sector is on the verge of destruction for these illegal vehicles, Habibur said around 1,500 transport traders and 6,000 workers have been passing days with great difficulties.

Chuadanga Road Transport Owners’ Association Vice-president Abul Kalam, General Secretary AKM Moin Uddin and Chuadanga Bus-Truck Union President M General Islam were, among others, present at the press conference.
