A suspected thief was killed when a mob beat him up severely in the Nazirpur upazila of Pirojpur yesterday morning.
The deceased was Jamal Hossen Hawlader, son of Hatem Ali Hawlader in Kumuripara area under the Sadar upazila.
Quoting witnesses, police said local people caught Jamal on Tuesday night while he was taking four stolen cows in a trawler.
The mob beat up Jamal leaving critically injured. Later they left him behind in the trawler in a canal in the Hularhat area.
A night guard found injured Jamal and informed the police.
Police rescued him and sent him to the Pirojpur Sadar Hospital where Jamal succumbed to his injuries around 7:15am.
Pirojpur Sadar police station OC SM Ziaul Haque said deceased Jamal Hawlader was an accused in seven cases, including theft and murder.
The body was sent to the hospital morgue.
