A suspected pirate has been killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Cox's Bazar's Moheshkhali upazila.
The deceased is Nurul Quader Rana, 34, a resident of Shapmara area of Dhalghata union of Moheshkhali upazila.
RAB-7 Media Officer and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP-Media) Md Mashkur Rahman confirmed the matter.
"On a tip-off, a team of RAB-7 raided a suspected pirate hideout in Moheshkhali's Matarbari Sairar Dale area around 5am on Monday," ASP Mashkur said.
Realizing our presence, the suspected pirates opened fire, causing us to retaliate, he added.
"Nurul was shot and injured during the gunfight," the ASP furthered.
Nurul was admitted to Moheshkhali Health Complex in critical condition, where the duty doctors announced him dead.
Later, his body was sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy, said the ASP.
RAB also recovered seven firearms, and 63 rounds of bullets from the scene, and filed a case about the matter.
ASP Mashkur said, Nurul was the prime suspect of the dacoity of the trawlers MV Ma-Babar Doa and MV Mahin on the coast of Noakhali's Hatia upazila on August 26.
He was also a suspect in several cases in Chittagong and Cox's Bazar, the ASP added.
