A 15-year-old girl committed suicide after a local youth in Bhandaria upazila of Pirojpur reportedly threatened to spread her altered image if she did not agree to a relationship with him.
The deceased was identified as Ruqaia Rupa, a tenth grade student of Bhandaria Bandar Govt. Girls High School.
The girl's father, Ruhul Amin Munshi, accused Tamim Khan, 19, of Bhandaria town, as responsible for his daughter’s death.
Tamim routinely harassed the girl for months on her way to school. On Friday, Tamim showed the victim a photoshopped picture, in which her face was attached to a naked body, and threatened to post it on Facebook for all to see.
On the same day Rupa disclosed the matter to her mom, who assured her of solving the matter after discussing it with her father when he got back home.
That same night Rupa locked her room from inside and when her parents broke in the door, they found her unconscious from having taken an assortment of pills.
She was rushed to Bhandaria Upazila Health Complex, and the duty-doctor transferred her to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where she died at 2 am, undergoing treatment.
Bhandaria police station OC Maksudur Rahman said the girl's body is in the morgue for autopsy and the police are investigating the incident.
