A suspected criminal has been killed in a “gunfight” with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) near Jhaoil bridge in Kamarkhanda upazila early Wednesday.
The deceased is Abdul Halim, 38, son of late Kamal Sarkar of Panchbaria village of the upazila.
Major Shafayet Sumon, commanding officer of RAB 12 crime prevention branch, said acting on a tip-off that some robbers were preparing to commit robberies, the RAB members conducted a drive there in the dead of night.
Sensing the elite force's presence, the gang opened fire at the law enforcers forcing them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.
All the robbers but Halim managed to flee the scene, the RAB officer said.
Two RAB members were also injured in the “gunfight”.
Later, the RAB personnel sent Halim’s body to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
Major Shafayet said Halim was accused in several cases including murder.
One foreign made pistol, one round of bullet, one magazine, two machetes and knives were recovered from the spot.
