Fifty people have been injured when a clash erupted between two groups over establishing supremacy in Monohorpur's Paikpara village under Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah.

The incident took place on Sunday following a heated debate between the two sides and 30 houses were vandalized and looted during the clash.

Among the injured, six people were taken to Jhenidah hospital in a critical condition, while others received treatment at Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex.

"The conflict between the two village groups has been going on for a long time, which escalated to the clash on Sunday. Jhenaidah police superintendent Md Hasanuzzaman is now investigating the incident,"  Shailkupa Police Station officer in-charge (OC) Bazlur Rahman.

Talking to Dhaka Tribune, locals said a long standing dispute between supporters of Union Parisad member Israel and village arbitrator Motiur Rahman continues for a long time over establishing supremacy in the area. On Sunday, Israil supporters launched an attack on Motiur’s men seeking vengeance for a previous attack.

Later, additional members of police were deployed in the area to prevent any untoward situation. However, locals fear the two groups might lock horns again in a bloody fight in other areas of the village.
