75-year-old freedom fighter beaten up by police officer

Update : 09 Apr 2017, 10:32 PM

Abdur Rashid, 75, and some of his family members were physically assaulted by a police team led by Sub-Inspector Ramjan Ali at their Rasulpur village home on Saturday night.

Rashid’s daughter Rafiunnesa said that the team of police visited their house after a case was filed against her father over a land dispute.

The complainants – siblings Munna and Abdul Mazid of the same village – also accompanied the police during the visit.

Rashid is now undergoing treatment at Satkhira Sadar Hospital.

Rashid's eldest son Tariqul was arrested from the house in the afternoon, and was released in the evening.

Satkhira Muktijoddha Sangsad Deputy Commander Abu Bakar Siddique told the Dhaka Tribune Sunday that the Superintendent of Police had been informed and was urged to take action against the police members involved in the assault.

SI Ramjan Ali, however, denied the allegation, saying: “I was present at the spot, but no assaults took place.”
