An accused in a murder case over a college student's death has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Lalpur upazila of Natore.
The incident occurred in Tofa Kata intersection of Gopalpur area of the upazila around 2am on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Shooter Manik, 48, alias Sumon alias Basu Manik, also a member of hijacking gang, who has over 15 cases filed against him on charges of murder, vehicle hijacking and robbery with Lalpur, Baraigram and Ishwardi police stations.
Three police officials were also injured in the incident, and they are being treated in Lalpur Upazila Health Complex, Lalpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazrul Islam Jewel and Superintendent of police (SP) Saifullah Al Mamun told Dhaka Tribune.
The OC said a police team from Baraigram police station arrested Manik over a case filed on shooting college student Alamin to death, and hijacking his motorbike in Baraigram on July 5.
During interrogation, Manik informed the police that he was also involved in two other murder and hijacking cases.
Based upon his information, Lalpur and Baraigram police combined forces and took Manik to Lalpur to gain more information in the matter – and also recover illegal arms, the OC said.
When they reached Tofa Kata intersection, Manik’s gang members opened fire at them, forcing the police to fire back in self-defence. At one point, Manik tried to escape from police custody; however, he got injured in the process.
Then the law enforcement teams took him to Lalpur Upazila Health Complex, where the duty doctors declared him dead.
The OC claimed that they have recovered two motorcycles, including that of murdered student Alamin's, a foreign gun and four bullets from Tofa Kata.
