Police are investigating the death of a housewife in Satkhira’s Polashpol area early yesterday as her husband, who claimed that she had committed suicide, left the body at a hospital.
Faruq Hossain, 24, brought the body of Munia Yasmin Tumpa, 20, to Satkhira Sadar Hospital around 2am yesterday, and told relatives over the phone that she had committed suicide.
But he fled the scene leaving the body at the hospital. Locals handed him over to the police in the afternoon.
Tumpa’s paternal uncle Ibrahim Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune that Tumpa and Faruq had got married two years ago and had an eight-month-old son. Soon after the marriage, Faruq started torturing her wife for dowry.
“Her father is not financially solvent. Yet, he managed Tk50,000 and gave it to Faruq so that he could start a business. But he wanted more,” Ibrahim said.
“Faruq himself took her body to Satkhira Sadar Hospital around 2am Friday and told her relatives that she had hanged herself from the ceiling fan.”
He alleged that Faruq had beaten her up and strangled her to death, and later staged a suicide plot to save his neck.
Satkhira sadar police Officer-in-Charge Firoz Hossain Molla, confirming the authenticity of the incident, said that doctors had conducted autopsy on the body around 1pm.
“We will be able to confirm the reason behind her death upon receiving the post-mortem examination report,” he added.
