Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan has said a direct train service from Dhaka to Benapole will be launched on July 25.
The new train service will facilitate the travel of India-bound people through the Benapole checkpost.
"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the train service from Dhaka through a video conference," the minister said, while talking to reporters after visiting the Benapole Railway Station on Wednesday afternoon.
Initially, a train will run from Dhaka to Benapole and vice versa daily, Sujan said.
The train, yet to be named, will have 10 coaches, will have 10 coaches, including two AC cabins and two with chairs, he added.
He said the fare for a AC cabin will be Tk1,200 while that with chairs will be Tk1,000. The non-AC seat will be Tk500, reports UNB.
The minister said the train will be a semi-express as it will stop at very few stations.
Around 6,000-7,000 people from different parts of the country, especially Dhaka, travel to India through the Benapole checkpost every day, sources at the checkpost said.
Most of them use buses to reach Benapole. However, they have to undergo untold sufferings very often due to gridlocks on roads, particularly at the Doulatdia and Paturia ferryghats.
Once the train service is in place, India-bound passengers can travel to Benapole with ease, the sources added.
