Subsequently, followers of Tablighi Jamaat took to adjacent schools and madrasa fields

Tangail district administration has stopped the three-day long Ijtema in Mirzapur, as the organizers did not acquire permission from the authorities prior to the event.

The Ijtema, arranged by followers of Maulana Saad, was scheduled to begin on Thursday.

Numerous followers and members of Tablighi Jamaat from home and abroad have already come to take part in the event.

According to locals, rival groups protested against the Ijtema, and filed complaint letters to several administrative offices to cancel the event.

Following directives from the authorities on Thursday, members of police were deployed on the Ijtema venue, and were seen removing pillars and tents, which were set up for the Ijtema.

Subsequently, gathered followers of Tablighi Jamaat took shelter in adjacent schools and madrasa fields.

One of the pilgrims, Abdur Rahman Shamim said: “The event was inaugurated by local Member of Parliament (MP) Ekabbar Hossain on Sunday. We were always supported by local administration in all our events across the country. We do not see any reason for this sudden halt.”

Mirzapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Abdul Malek said: “The organizers took no prior permission from the authority. So we had to call off the event.”
