RUET student goes missing in Jamuna River

The victim was identified as Rifat Hossain, 21, son of Sherekul Islam of Dewanpara of the Kumairgari area

A student of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) went missing in the Jamuna River in Naogaon town on Thursday afternoon.

The victim was identified as Rifat Hossain, 21, son of Sherekul Islam of Dewanpara of the Kumairgari area.

According to relatives, Rifat had come home during the Eid holidays. He and his cousin, Ullash, after a cricket match went to swim in the Jamuna River near his home town around 1pm. 

They were trying to cross the river from the south end to the north end, but at one point Rifat became tired and went missing while his cousin managed to swim ashore.

After Ullash called for help, police and locals tried their best to find the missing person but failed to locate him.

Naogaon Fire Service Station Senior Manager Saber Ali said: “Five officials from Naogaon Station and five others including two divers from Rajshahi Station are engaged in the rescue operation.” 

The divers halted their drive at 8pm on Thursday and resumed it Friday morning but are yet to find Rifat.

Naogaon Sadar police station OC Suhrawardy Hossain said: “Fire Service rescue operations are ongoing, while local fishermen are also casting their nets.”
