A nine-year-old girl has been raped in the Moddhopara village of the Kuptola union of the Sadar upazila, Gaibandha.
The incident took place as the accused, Shakil Mia, 19, allegedly raped the child when she came to his house to charge a torchlight on Sunday evening.
According to the police, Shakil forced himself on her and later threatened the girl not to tell the incident to anyone.
But as she fell ill after going home, her grandmother found out about the rape and took her to the Gaibandha Sadar Hospital.
Dr Tahera Akter Moni, junior consultant gynaecologist of the Gaibandha Sadar Hospital, confirmed the incident to Dhaka Tribune.
"We conducted several tests and found evidence of rape."
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Gaibandha police station OC Khan Md Shahriar said: "The child’s grandmother filed a case against the accused. He is on the run. We are working to arrest him. We have detained Shakil's father Ayub Khan for questioning about his son's whereabouts."
