Immigration authorities at the Benapole check-post have detained seven people—including three Rohingyas—over alleged attempted human trafficking.
They also seized seven passports from the detainees, on Tuesday evening.
The detainees are: Rafiqul Islam, 45, from Munshiganj; Zaman Khan, 50, from Dhaka; Kayem Khan, 19, Zaman's son; Sarwar Islam, 13, Rafiqul's son; Marizan Begum, 19, Rafiqul's daughter; Yasin Arafat, 24, from Noakhali, and Mamunur Rashid, 21, from the same area.
Kayem, Sarwar, and Marizan were detained for using fake information in their passports; while Yasin and Mamunur were detained for using fake passports.
According to immigration sources, two traffickers brought three Rohingyas to the Benapole check-post, with the intention of trafficking them to India.
However, when trying to fill out their immigration forms, the authorities became suspicious of their activities and detained them for questioning. During interrogation, the detainees confessed to using fake information in the passports, and faking the passports, to get to India.
Benapole check-post immigration officer, Abul Basher, told Dhaka Tribune: "We have handed over the detainees to Benapole port police station, on charges of faking passports and trafficking. They will be sent to Jessore jail on Wednesday afternoon."
