5 killed in separate ‘gunfights’ in 4 districts

The incidents occurred in Cox's Bazar, Sirajganj and Madaripur

Two alleged pirates, two suspected drug dealers, and a fugitive were killed in separate “gunfights” in Cox's Bazar, Sirajganj, and Madaripur districts.

The incidents occurred on Tuesday.

In Cox's Bazar, two suspected pirates were killed in a reported gunfight between two rival gangs at Fateh Ali Shikderpara Bila in Kutubdia.

The deceased, Irfan Ullah Prakash alias Irfan Majhi, 32, and Nur Hossain, 26, were found with gunshot wounds and taken to Kutubdia Upazila Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead.

Kutubdia police station OC Didarul Ferdous said: “Upon information, a team reached the spot and recovered the injured along with a pistol, four rounds of bullets, and 400 yaba pills.”

“The two were accused in several cases, including robbery and drugs,” he added.

In Sirajganj, a suspected drug dealer was killed in another reported gunfight between two drug gangs at Raipur Railway Station in Sadar upazila.

The deceased, Nurul Islam Mohon, 55, was found with gunshot wounds early on Tuesday.

Police claimed that the drug dealers were fighting over sharing of money. 

Sirajganj Sadar police station OC Md Daud said: "We sent a team when we learned about the gunfight,"

“Nurul was accused in several drugs-related cases,” he added.

In Madaripur, a suspected drug dealer was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Uttar Choraikandi area of Kalkini upazila.

RAB 8, in a media statement on Tuesday, said the deceased, Jahir Uddin Jokka, 45, an accused in four drugs-related cases, was a notorious drug dealer.

Members of RAB arrested Jahir and took him along on a drive to arrest other drug dealers early on Tuesday.

But when they reached Uttar Choraikandi, a gang of drug dealers opened fire on the elite team, during which Jahir sustained a gunshot wound and died.

In Chapainawabganj, a fugitive on the run with 19 cases, including murder and arson, was killed after a reported gunfight with police at Barghariya-Pulparap. 

The exchange took place on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Bagha, 35, of Chunnakhali area of Sadar upazila.

Chapainawabganj Police Superintendent MM Mozahidul Islam said the police arrested Bagha from his house around 4pm. Later, police rushed to Baroghariya-Pulapara to catch his associates. When they reached there, Bagha's associates fired at police. Bagha was injured when the police returned fire.
