Newborn survives abandonment, finds a home

The sensational infant who miraculously survived after being abandoned in a drain on February 21 has finally found a home. Hearing of the unfathomable cruelty done unto the child, named Ekush after the day he was discovered, numerous families clamoured to adopt him. On Wednesday, a Chittagong court granted custody of the child to the couple of Dr Zakir Islam and Shakila Akter. Special Public Prosecutor MA Fayez told the Dhaka Tribune: “Child Affairs Court Judge Jannatul Ferdous listed a condition - to open an education insurance of Tk10 lakh for Ekush, and then take custody of him from Chittagong medical authorities.”Shakila Akter and Dr Zakir Islam after the hearing which granted them custody of the newborn Rabin Chowdhury/Dhaka Tribune Shakila Akter and Dr Zakir Islam after the hearing which granted them custody of the newborn Rabin Chowdhury/Dhaka TribuneThe newborn was found kicking and crying with all his might, on the morning of February 21 in a drain in Colonel Hat area in Chittagong. A group Bangladesh Chhatra League activists found him and took him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital after naming him Ekush. When the child’s abandonment made news, 14 families filed applications to adopt him. PP Fayez said there were other conditions for adopting Ekush, but they would be listed on the official papers.
