In two districts, three men have allegedly murdered their wives, while two of them have subsequently committed suicide.

In Gazipur’s Kapasia, Fahima Akhter, 18, was found strangled to death at her parents’ home, while her husband, Roman Mia, 21, was found hanging by the neck from the rafters of the same room, yesterday morning.

Police said the couple had been estranged for some time and that they suspect that Roman killed his wife before committing suicide. Family says Roman had come to visit Fahima on Sunday night.

In Gazipur’s Kaliakoir, garments worker Fahima Akhter, 21, was stabbed to death by her ex-husband Maftul Islam, 25, who then stabbed himself in the stomach.

They are both from Sherpur. Police said Maftul had been lying in wait on Fahima’s way back home on Saturday evening. He jumped her and stabbed her to death.

While running away, he was confronted by passers-by and stabbed himself. He fell into a ditch on the roadside and died there. According to police, Fahima had divorced Maftul because of his drug addiction.

In Sylhet city’s Sheikhghat Kalapara, newly married Rajna Chowdhury, 20, was found strangled to death in her home yesterday morning.

Her husband, Lakkhan Das, a driver for Sylhet City Corporation, has been missing since then. Police suspect that he ran away after murdering his wife.

Sources said the couple had married last month and moved into Sylhet this month.

Rajna’s family alleged that Lakkhan had killed her over domestic arguments.
