The upazila nirbahi officer of Rajoir in Madaripur had a child marriage called off in Bajitpur village and took responsibility of the girl.
According to the UNO office, a ninth-grader student was set to be married off to an older man on Friday afternoon.
Her father had committed suicide after serving time in jail. Her mother was compelled to marry her off, after having her elder sister married off, the officials said.
But UNO Shohana Nasrin intervened and had the wedding called off.
She told the family that she would bear their cost of her education and her family’s rehabilitation.
