Gazipur college student’s murder: Accused confesses to crime

Mustakim Rahman Raju, 17, is accused of murdering Sharmin Akhter Liza, 18, student of Konabari Cambridge College and daughter of Shafiqul Islam of the Ambag Eidgah area.

The accused in the murder of a female college student confessed to his crime in front of a court here on Thursday.

Mustakim Rahman Raju, 17, is accused of murdering Sharmin Akhter Liza, 18, student of Konabari Cambridge College and daughter of Shafiqul Islam of the Ambag Eidgah area.

He confessed to his crime before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Hamidur Rahman on Thursday evening.

The judge ordered Raju to be sent to jail.

Students and teachers of various schools and colleges in the municipality staged demonstrations, protesting Liza's murder, forming human chains in front of Cambridge College and Lincoln Memorial College.

When protesters attempted to block the Dhaka-Tangail highway near Konabari, police rushed to the spot and assured them of delivering justice, said Konabari police station OC, Emdad Hossain.

The murder took place in Konabari on Wednesday.

Raju was caught red handed, given a beating by a mob, and handed over to the police.

According to police, locals, and Sharmin’s brother Sujan, Sharmin was on her way back home after her exams. On the way, the boy stopped her and proposed to her.  When she rejected his advances,, the boy got angry and stabbed her.

Hearing her screams, locals rushed to the scene gave the boy a beating, and took Sharmin to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital. She was later moved to Uttara Medical College Hospital where she was pronounced dead by duty doctors.

Police went to the scene and the boy was handed over to them.

Sharmin’s brother Sujan said: “The boy would disturb my sister all the time on her way to college. He also threatened Sharmin several times.”
