4 killed in separate ‘gunfights’ in 4 districts

The incidents took place in: Dhaka, Cox's Bazar, Chittagong, and Meherpur

Four individuals have been killed in separate reported gunfights in four districts across the country.

A suspected drug dealer has been killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Mohammadpur, Dhaka.

Nabi Hossain, 47, was killed in the incident that occurred around 5:15am on Thursday. 

RAB said Nabi was a known yaba dealer in Geneva Camp, and he used to smuggle yaba from Teknaf and Cox's Bazer to Dhaka.

RAB 2 Company Commander Mohiuddin Faruque confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune and said they received information about Nabi and his associates delivering a yaba consignment. 

“Nabi was accused in several cases lodged with different police stations,” he said.

“We are trying to arrest the people who fled the scene,” he added.

A foreign made pistol, bullets, and 10,000 yaba pills were recovered from the spot.

In Cox's Bazar, a suspected yaba trader has been killed in a reported gunfight with a member of the police. 

The incident took place in the district's Satgharia area of Teknaf around 4am on Thursday.

The deceased is Abul Kashem, 32. 

Teknaf police station Officer-in-Charge Pradip Kumar Dash confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.

He said: "We took Kashem on a drive in the area to seize illegal guns and drugs, when, suddenly, his associates opened fire at us. We fired back in self-defence. 

"Later, we recovered his body from the spot. His body has been sent to the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex for autopsy."

Police recovered two guns, nine bullets, and 3,400 yaba pills from the spot.

In Chittagong, a suspected pirate has been killed in a reported gunfight with the members of RAB 7. 

The deceased is Delwar Hossain, 32.

The incident took place in the district's Chhanua area under Banshkhali upazila around 5am on Tuesday.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune Mimtanur Rahman, assistant director of RAB 7 said that a gunfight ensued with the pirates when a team of the elite force went to the area to recover arms.

"A pirate died during the gunfight. We seized five guns and 145 bullets from the spot," he said.

When contacted regarding the incident, Banshkhali police station Officer-in-Charge Kamal Hossain said: "The police recovered the pirate's body from the spot. The body has been sent for autopsy."

In Meherpur, a suspected drug peddler has been killed due to an internal clash between two rival groups. 

The deceased is, Fazlur Rahman Fozu, 45.

The incident took place in the district's Harbhanga village of Gangni upazila on Wednesday. 

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune Gangni police station Officer-in-Charge Horendronath Sarkar said: "Two drug-peddling groups engaged in a gunfight in the area. We responded as soon as possible. 

"Later, we recovered a body from the spot which the locals identified as Fazlur Rahman Fozu."

Police recovered one gun and 1kg of cannabis from the spot.

In April 2019, till the filing of this report, seven individuals have been killed, in separate reported gunfights, in different districts of the country.
