Update : 27 Mar 2017, 12:31 AM
The nation observed the 47th Independence Day on Sunday through different ceremonies and commemorating the sacrifice of the martyred freedom fighters in 1971. Thousands of people thronged the National Mausoleum in Savar where President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid their tributes first in the morning by placing wreaths and standing in solemn silence in front of the memorial plaque. A team of the armed forces gave a guard of honour on the occasion, which is also the National Day of Bangladesh. Leaders and activists of political parties, social, cultural organisations as well as people of all ages also joined in the commemorative celebration in other districts. In Narayanganj, several hundred activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the radical student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami that opposed the birth of Bangladesh, brought out processions in DIT Commercial area in several spells starting from 8am. They wore red and green T-shirts and carried the national flag.Jessore-26-march-observed-Pic-1 PHOTO: DHAKA TRIBUNE The processions created a huge traffic jam on Bangabandhu Road for about an hour. However, Narayanganj Sadar model police station Officer-in-Charge Asaduzzaman told the Dhaka Tribune that they had not been informed of any Shibir procession taking place in the city. “If it is really so, that might have been a flash procession,” said the OC. At the Hili border in Dinajpur, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials conveyed greetings of the Independence Day to the Indian Border Security Forces (BSF) by distributing sweetmeats. BGB’s Hili ICP Camp Commander Subedar Mahbub Alam gave the sweetmeats to BSF Camp Commander SI DP Dutt at the zero line around noon.Rangamati-pic-(1) PHOTO: DHAKA TRIBUNE Jessore district unit Awami League brought out a huge procession and paid tributes at the Independence Mausoleum of the district town. Later, they took an oath administered by Jessore 3 lawmaker Kazi Nabil Ahmed. The Awami League leader hoped that the country would be free from terrorism and militancy under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and the spirit of the 1971 Liberation War would be upheld. Independence Day processions and rallies were also reported from other districts including Bagerhat, Barisal, Bhola, Bogra, Comilla, Dinajpur, Feni, Jhalakathi, Rangamati and Satkhira.
