An alleged drug trader was killed in a "gunfight" with police, in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar.
Md Hossain, 24, was killed in Habirchara of Sadar union in Teknaf upazila, in the early hours of Saturday, confirmed Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Teknaf police station, Pradip Kumar Das.
The OC said: "Police conducted a drive in the Habirchara area, after hearing of several armed drug traders dealing in yaba in that area. Upon becoming aware of a police presence, they started firing at the police, forcing police to fire back in self-defence."
Md Hossain was killed in the gunfight, the OC said. "Hossain, was a listed drug trader and several cases have been lodged against him with the police station."
Police recovered three local LGs, 12 rounds of bullets, and 40 empty bullet shells from the spot, the OC added. He also said three police officers, including Sub-Inspector Farhad, were injured in the gunfight.
Hossain's body was sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. A case is being prepared in connection with the incident.
