Observing genocide day should be at the heart of Bangladesh’s political life, speakers said at a Genocide Remembrance Day event on Monday.
They said the Pakistani occupation forces and their collaborators used religion as an excuse to carry out well planned brutal attacks and mass killings on the night of March 25 in 1971, at the Bangladesh National Museum auditorium.
Professor Muntasir Mamun of the History Department at Dhaka University said: “We need to hold the spirit of this day to develop the ideal policies dreamed of by the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.”
Bangla Academy’s former director general, Prof Shamsuzzaman Khan, suggested that the data and history of that night should be collected from every district.
“The government should promote this day nationally and also tell the world about the history of the day,” he added.
Bangabandhu Chair professor, Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir Bir Protik, at Islamic University, pointing to the young, said: “Young people read and practice the true history and also preserve it by holding up our liberation spirit.”
Bangladesh National Museum Board of Trustees President, Hashem Khan, presided over the program, where Riaz Ahmed, DG of National Museum, and Secretary of National Museum, Abdul Mazid, also spoke among others.
After the program, they held a candlelight tribute to the martyrs in front of the National Museum.
