Leaders and activists of Awami League's Rangamati unit on Wednesday demanded capital punishment for the attackers who killed the party's Belaichari upazila unit president Suresh Kanti Tanchangya on Tuesday and seven people in a separate gun attack at Baghaichhari on Monday.
At a protest rally organized in the district town, Rangamati MP and Awami League district unit President Dipankar Talukder said that they would announce tougher programs, including blockades and shutdowns, if the perpetrators of these attacks were not brought to book as soon as possible.
He also called for combing operations in the hills to seize all illegal weapons and catch the killers.
Unknown assailants opened fire on Suresh Kanti Tanchangya while he and his family members were travelling in a boat from Farua union to Belaichari upazila town on Tuesday.
The incident took place less than 24 hours after unidentified gunmen killed seven people, including two polling officers and four Ansar and VDP members, after the end of the second phase of the Fifth Upazila Parishad Election in Baghaichhari.
Former reserved seat MP Firoja Begum Chinu, Rangamati Municipality Mayor Akbar Hossain Chowdhury, and other local Awami League leaders also spoke at Wednesday's program.
They also urged the government to take immediate action to establish peace in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
