Suspected drug trader killed in Teknaf 'gunfight'

Three police officials were also injured in the shooting

A suspected drug trader has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila, Cox's Bazar.

The incident occurred in the Habirchhara hill area of Teknaf around 4am on Tuesday.

The deceased, Yasin Ahmed, 25, from the upazila's Lamar Bazar area, was a listed drug trader and a criminal, police claimed.

According to the law enforcement agency, three police members – Teknaf police station's 

Sub-Inspector (SI) Borhan, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sanjib and Constable Shukkur – were also injured. They are under currently under treatment.

Police have recovered 10,000 yaba pills, two locally made guns and nine rounds of bullets from the spot.

Teknaf police station Officer-in-Charge Pradip Kumar Das confirmed the matter, saying that based on a tip-off, a police team conducted a drive in the Habirchhara hill area.

Upon seeing the police, the drug trader allegedly opened fire at them, causing the police to fire back in self-defense. However, the other drug traders managed to escape, leaving the bullet-riddled body of Yasin, who died on the way to the hospital.

The police official said: "The body has been kept at Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy, and a case was filed regarding the matter under related laws."

The deceased had at least five cases against him with the Teknaf police station, he added.
