New Zealand terror attack: Dr Samad to be buried in Christchurch

Family acknowledges his death, confirms burial in Christchurch

Family members of Dr Abdus Samad confirmed his death on Saturday, adding that he will be buried in New Zealand.

Toha Mohammad, eldest son of Dr Samad, said they got to know from the authorities in New Zealand about his father’s death on Saturday, after they identified his body.

He added that his father’s body will be handed over to family members in New Zealand on Sunday.

The eldest son also said his father will be buried at the local Muslim community graveyard in the vicinity.

He will accompany other family members to New Zealand to complete the burial rituals.

According to various news reports of Bangladeshi origin, Dr Samad and his wife, Kishwara Sultana, were presumed to be victims of the terror attack.

However it was later confirmed that Kishwara was not at the mosque during the incident.

A senior diplomat at the High Commission in Australia, which looks after Bangladesh’s interests in New Zealand, confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune yesterday afternoon, the death of Dr Abdus Samad, a teacher of Lincoln University.

The New Zealand government said it will soon publish the list of all those who died in the terror attack.

Considering everything, Dr Abdus Samad’s wife and two sons are facing tough times filled with uncertainty, said Rabeya Khatun, wife of Samad’s younger brother, Abdul Kader, from Dhaka.

Professor Dr Samad, a former faculty member of Bangladesh Agriculture University from Madhur Hailla village of Kurigram’s Nageshwari, was working at Lincoln University and living in New Zealand with his wife and two sons.
