In light of the recent mugging incidents in the capital during Eid-ul-Azha festivities, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner of Crime Department Dr K Mohiuddin has said that individuals must take personal responsibility for their belongings and safety.
The additional commissioner made this remark on Monday while talking to journalists at the DMP media centre.
Mohiuddin disclosed: "I want to put forth one thing, we have initiated a special operation against muggers, which is now more active. The inspector general of police (IGP) has given instructions regarding this, and it is being implemented by the commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. We have arrested 145 muggers in the past 48 hours, with 114 arrests in the last 24 hours and 31 in the preceding 24 hours."
Commenting on two recent incidents that occurred around Eid-ul-Azha, the additional commissioner said these two incidents have shocked everyone.
“A journalist fell victim to muggers in the Hatirjheel area on the night of Eid-ul-Azha. The other incident involves the tragic death of one of our police constables who was attacked by muggers in the Farmgate area. We are deeply upset by these two incidents,” he said.
"We need to understand one thing; everyone must ensure the security of their personal belongings and their lives. Of course, the state has a responsibility for security. But people should not talk on their mobile phones while sitting in vehicles late at night… Many people talk on public transport but keep their mobile phones near the window, which creates an opportunity to snatch it," he added.
“The DMP commissioner gave necessary directives to all officer-in-charges in different police stations to prevent the recurrence of such incidents,” the additional commissioner assured.
