Update : 28 Feb 2019, 01:44 PM

Former Awami League MP Amanur Rahman Khan Rana has been admitted to hospital due to health complications arising from high blood pressure.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Court Inspector Anwarul Islam said: "Rana was taken to Tangail general hospital around 1:30pm on Thursday, after his blood pressure increased beyond normal levels."

Meanwhile, Dr Narayan Chandra Saha of the hospital said: “Former lawmaker Rana is staying in a VIP cabin on the third floor. He is under constant surveillance by a medical team.”

Earlier this day, the deposition of one person from the plaintiff's side was recorded, on Thursday, in the presence of the ex-lawmaker for Tangail 3 constituency at a Tangail court.

Following the cross-examination, Additional District and Sessions Judge of Tangail court, Maksuda Khanam, set April 4 for the next hearing.

According to court sources, Rana was produced before the court around 10:25am. Judge Maksuda Khanam started court proceedings at 11:20am.

The court then recorded the deposition of former Chhatra League district president and case witness Nazmul Huda Nobin. A total of 14 witnesses have given their deposition in the court so far.

On January 18, 2013, influential Awami League leader and freedom fighter, Faruque Ahmed, was rescued, from near his house in the College Para area, in critical condition. He was taken to Tangail General Hospital and declared dead.

Three days after the incident, Faruque's wife Nahar Ahmed filed a case with Tangail Model police station. Although the police from the station initially started investigating the case, it was later taken under the jurisdiction of the district detective police.

With the investigation underway, on August 11, 2014, police arrested a close employee of Rana, Anisur Rahman Raja.

On August 27, 2014, Raja made a confessional statement to Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Shahadat Hossain after a 15-day remand.

On February 3, 2016, police filed charge-sheets in the court against 14 accused, including MP Rana and three of his brothers.

Another accused, Md Ali, was arrested on August 24 of the same year. He confessed to Senior Judicial Magistrate, Sheikh Najmun Nahar, on September 5 after a remand of 10 days.

From both of the confessions, it emerged that Tangail-3 (Ghatail) MP, Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, and his younger brother, former Vice-President of Central Chhatra League, Saniyat Khan Bappa, were involved in Faruque Ahmed's murder.

Later, it also came to light that Rana's  two other brothers—interim Mayor of Tangail Municipality, Shahidur Rahman Khan; and President of Tangail district Merchant Association, Jahidur Rahman Khan Kakon—were involved in the murder as well.
