Activists of Jana Sanghati Samity (JSS), an ethnic community-based political association has started a 48-hour road and waterway blockade and market boycott program from Wednesday morning in the Baghaichhari upazila in Rangamati.

The blockade was initiated to press home their demand for the withdrawal of a case filed against its members in the Basu Chakma murder case.

Due to the blockade, traffic movement of long distance buses and launches were suspended in the upazila. However, shops and educational institutions remained unaffected by the blockade.

Meanwhile, Baghaichhari Police Station officer-in-Charge MA Manzur said: “The law and order situation in Baghaichhari is normal. There are adequate police personnel in charge to avoid any hostile incidents.

He also said the case cannot be withdrawn and the law enforcers will perform strict duties to ensure law and order in the upazila.

On January 4 evening, Basu Chakma, a member of JSS MN-Larma Group, was killed in Baghaichhari upazila’s Babupara area, as a result of post-election dominance between the regional parties.

On 5 January, JSS MN-Larma Group’s Prabhat Kumar Chakma filed a murder case as the plaintiff. In which, the upazila Chairman Rishi Chakma along with JSS’s 27 leaders and activists were shown accused.

Another case was filed by the police for illegal possession of arms.
