4 held with firearms, bullets in Rangamati

Two of them have been held with 980 rounds of bullets

Four men were detained with illegal firearms and bullets during separate drives in Rangamati on Wednesday.

Two of them were arrested with arms and ammunition in a joint drive conducted by the police and army in Gabachhari forest area of Raikhali union in Kaptai upazila around 5am.

Confirming the detentions, Rangamati Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jahedul Haque Rony told the Dhaka Tribune that these two were identified as Chaching Marma, 29, and Ungshingnu Marma.

Police said the duo were members of Arakan Liberation.

During the raid, one G3 rifle, 24 rounds of bullets, two magazines, and an ammunition pouch were recovered from them.

Sources from the joint force said these two Arakan Liberation members have been collecting donations, carrying out organizational activities in the area and sending information to the organization’s higher-ups for a long time.

On the other hand, two other men were detained with 980 rounds of bullets during a stop and search at a security check post in Baghaihat area of the district’s Baghaichhari Upazila around 12pm Wednesday.

Sajek police OC Nurul Anwar said police had stopped the men, who were travelling on a motorcycle, at the check post and searched them based on tip-off.

The duo was identified as Karnamohan Tripura and Sagar Tripura.

OC Nurul said they were interrogating the two, while preparations were underway to file cases under the arms and explosives acts against them.
