Two workers have gone missing when stones collapsed on them at a stone quarry in Companiganj upazila in Sylhet district.
The stones fell on the workers– Sona Mia, 25, son of Anwar Hossain of Sunamganj upazila, and Nurul Haque, 30, son of Wazid Ali of the same upazila –when they were illegally extracting them at Shah Arpin Tilla on Monday afternoon.
Confirming the matter, Companiganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tajul Islam said: "We are trying to remove water from the stone quarry in order to rescue the two missing workers.”
Earlier, a ban was imposed on stone extraction at Shah Arpin Tilla by a court. However, influential people in the area have allegedly been using workers to illegally extract stones from the quarry, which has lead to the death of many people.
