Suspected drug trader killed in Teknaf ‘gunfight’

Police recovered 6,000 yaba pills

A suspected drug trader has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar district. 

The “gunfight” took place in Shaplapur-Puranpara area around 5am on Saturday.

The deceased is Habib Ullah Habib, 35, son of Mohammad Hossain of the same area.

Police sources said Habib’s name was in the Home Ministry’s wanted list of drug traders. 

Teknaf police station Officer-in-Charge Pradip Kumar Das said: “We took Habib with us and carried out a raid in Puranpara area. 

“Sensing our presence, his associates opened fired at us.”

In retaliation, the police fired back that left Habib dead while the others managed to flee the scene.

“His body will be sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar morgue for autopsy,” he said.

Meanwhile, three policemen were also injured during the incident.

Police recovered 6,000 yaba pills, two guns, and 14 bullets from the spot.
