Considering the safety and convenience of travelers, the government has decided to take an initiative to introduce a modern passenger ship with a direct route between Cox’s Bazar and St Martin, said Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan.
He said the government was taking a number of measures to organize the port city of Cox’s Bazar in this regard.
The minister added that the direct water route between Cox’s Bazar and St Martin, which would use a passenger ship with modern facilities, would be of benefit to the tourism industry.
With the initiative, it would be possible to reach St Martin from Chittagong within four to five hours, he said.
The minister made the comments to reporters after the inauguration of the BIWTA bungalow, a modern lighthouse and dredging of the Bakkhali River in Cox’s Bazar, around 2pm on Thursday.
The minister added that this was the first time river dredging work was begun by the government in Cox’s Bazar.
The dredging of the Bakkhali River would facilitate the commute of people from the Maheshkhali, Chakaria and Kutubdia Islands, Shahjahan said.
Earlier, the minister inaugurated the BITWA inspection bungalow around noon, before inaugurating the river excavation work from the BITWA jetty at 1pm. He would inaugurate the modernisation of the lighthouse later in the afternoon.
