16 injured in gas cylinder explosion in Rohingya camp

Most of the wounded are Rohingya children between ages 10 and 15

At least 16 people,most of them children,have been injured in a gas cylinder explosion at a Rohingya refugee camp inCox’s Bazar.

The incident took place at the G-2 Block of the Madhurcharacamp, also known as Camp No 5,at Ukhiya’s Kutupalong around 8am on Saturday, said police and witnesses.

Four of the critically injured wereidentified as balloon seller Md Ilias and Rohingya children Azizul Haque, Aman Ullah and Alkama.

They were rushed to the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) hospital at Kutupalongat first, but were later referred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, said Madhurchara camp police outpost’s In-Charge Inspector Md Yasin.

He said that the casualties occurred when the gas cylinder Ilias was using to fill up balloons exploded in the morning.At the time, Ilias was surrounded by children curious to see his work.
