Police have arrested Paikka Girls High School Managing Committee Member Shafiqul Islam, 42, for attempting to rape a ninth grade schoolgirl in Dhanbari upazila of Tangail district.
The perpetrator was apprehended in a raid conducted in the upazila on Wednesday night.
On the same night of the incident the schoolgirl filed an ‘attempt to rape’ case against the accused with Dhanbari police station under the women and children repression prevention act.
Dhanbari police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mojibur Rahman said: “The victim filed a case against the accused on Wednesday night and subsequently he was produced in Tangail court on Thursday.”
Meanwhile, after getting wind of the news, local residents vandalized accused Shafiqul’s house.
Dhanbari Upazila Parishad Chairman Mir Faruk Ahmad and (OC) Majibur Rahman assured the locals of exemplary justice against the culprit and calmed locals.
According to the police and local sources, at 10pm, on Wednesday, Paikka Girls High School Managing Committee Member Shafiqul Islam, attempted to forcefully drag the girl to a nearby forest and rape her.
After the schoolgirl resisted and screamed locals rushed to the spot, which is when Shafiqul made his escape, but was later caught by the police and sent to court.
Local Union Parishad Member Abdul Majid, Female Member Jamilah Begum, school teachers Abdur Razzak and Shajahan Ali, and locals told the police that Shafiqul had previously committed engaged in misconduct using his political influence and that he deserves punishment.
