A suspected robber has been killed in an alleged gunfight with police in Shariatpur.

The incident occurred in the village of Dasarta in Shariatpur Sadar upazila around 2:30am Wednesday.

According to police, the deceased is Salahuddin alias Sagor from the district’s Gosairhat upazila. He was a member of a inter-district gang of robbers.

Police also said they acted on a tip-off and arrested Salahuddin for the many charges to his name in Zajira upazila of Shariatpur. Afterwards, police took him to Dasarta, to recover weapons, based on his testimony.

However, other members of the gang fired their guns at the police, starting a gunfight that lasted about 10 minutes, after which the other robbers fled. Police then found Salahuddin, who had tried to escape, but was shot. They then took him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, but the attending doctor pronounced him dead.

Salahuddin had six cases against him at multiple Shariatpur police stations.

Police also recovered: a gun, four machetes, one knife, six crude bombs, and a Chinese axe from the spot.

Shariatpur Sadar Palang Model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman confirmed the matter, saying: “Due to a recent spike in robbery in the area, we began searching for robbers with existing warrants. That is how we found Salahuddin, and took him to recover the weapons stash—based on information he provided.

“After we reached the location, his cohorts shot at us, and we fired back. Soon, they retreated and escaped. However, Salahuddin tried to escape and was shot,” he added.

Last week, two robbers were caught by locals while attempting to escape after robbing some houses near the office of Shariatpur’s superintendent of police. The locals quickly formed a mob and beat the robbers, killing one.
