After being captured in Tangail’s Bhuapur upazila, a wild fishing cat (mecho bagh) belonging to an endangered species has been set free in the Madhupur forest by officers of the Forest Department.

The rare feline was captured Friday evening, and released around 3:30pm on Saturday.

Local Union Parishad member Rafiqul Islam Dulal said: “On Friday evening, locals spotted the fishing cat and managed to capture it using a net.”

Afterwards, they informed local authorities of the matter, and Bhuapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jhoton Chanda visited the location. The large feline was then placed in a cage, and the Forest Department took it to a safe place.

Bhuapur Forest Department Social Forestry Plantation Centre in-charge Jashim Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune: “The fishing cat has been released into Madhupur forest on Saturday afternoon.”
