3 family members killed, 5 injured in Tangail truck accident

The incident occurred in Shubhulla, Mirzapur upazila in the early hours of Tuesday

Three members of one family have been killed, and five others of the same family were injured, when a truck lost control and overturned in Tangail.

The accident occurred in Shubhulla of Mirzapur upazila, near the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge Highway, in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased – Niranjan Mali, 30, his wife Sagori Mali, 25, and their daughter Swarna, 7 –were ready-made garments workers from Joypurhat district. 

The injured are Lipi Rani andher daughter Bonna; Beli Rani and her younger sister Dipti Rani; and Beli’s daughter Shilpi Rani—who are close relatives of the deceased.

The whole family was going home for the holiday to celebrate Durga Puja.  

According to police sources, the truck driver lost control of the vehicle near the Shubhulla area on the highway. The truck was bound for the Northern region of the country and was transporting a cargo of tiles. The truck overturned, killing the three people riding on top of the cargo.

The five injured in the accident were taken to Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital and provided first aid.

Commenting on the matter, Gorai highway police Sub-Inspector (SI) Matiur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune: "We have brought the three bodies to the police station. The truck driver and his assistant have been on the run since the accident."

Mirzapur police station SI Faisal Ahmed said: "We believe the accident occurred because the driver fell asleep while driving."
