New JMB’s Rajshahi divisional military commander Azimul Islam, who was killed in an alleged gunfight with the police early Thursday, used his foster father’s house to train militants and hold meetings.
Azimul alias Al Amin alias Rony was previously linked to Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. “He became the military commander of the New JMB’s Rajshahi division in short time because of his efficiency,” OC Md Erfan of Sherpur police in Bogra said yesterday.
Azimul is the son of Durul Haque of Bujruk Rajarampur village under Godagari of Rajshahi. He used to stay at his foster father Ataur Rahman’s house, which was used as a training centre of New JMB, according to police.
Based on a tip-off, a team of Bogra Detective Branch and Sherpur police raided the village and found Azimul on Tuesday night. “But he fled stabbing DB constables Abdus Salam and Ismail Hossain.
“He was later arrested and taken to Bogra. His associates opened fire on the police when they were conducting a drive at Jamnagar village in Sherpur area around 3am on Thursday,” the OC said, adding that Azimul had died as the police retaliated.
The post-mortem examination was conducted on Thursday, and the body was kept at the morgue since no one from his family came to take the body.
