Police say they have arrested a notorious firearms dealer and a member of banned militant group Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh in Chapainawabganj during their special drive in the district.

Thirty-two men, accused in various cases, were arrested during the 24-hour drive.

Police identified the alleged arms dealer as Abdul Malek, 38, and the JMB member as Mahfuzur Rahman alias Mohon, 28, at a media briefing on Wednesday.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mahbub Alam Khan said, they foiled an arms deal and arrested Malek with a foreign made pistol, a magazine and three bullets from a park near the town.

Malek is named in 13 cases that accuse him of possessing illegal firearms, explosives, robbery, extortion, and murder, among others, the ASP told the media.

Mahbub said, they raided a house in the Gomostapur Upazila to apprehend JMB members “who had been planning to carry out subversive activities.”

“We managed to arrest Mohon from there. The others fled,” the ASP said. “We also seized 300gm of gunpowder from the house.”

Police said, they also seized 500 bottles of phensedyl and 200gm of marijuana during their drive.
