Family rejects police report

Tasfia Amin, a schoolgirl who was found dead in Chittagong’s Patenga area on May 2, committed suicide by drowning, says a police report.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police’s (CMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner Abu Bakar Siddique said Detective Branch (DB) Sub-Inspector Swapan Kumar submitted the final report to the prosecution section of the court on Sunday, reports UNB.

He said: “Drowning was mentioned as the cause of death.”

During the investigation, a total of 16 people, including six eyewitnesses, had made depositions, Abu Bakar said, adding that the viscera report also stated that Tasfia had drowned in water.

"Based on the witness statements and the autopsy report, we have reached the conclusion that Tasfia committed suicide," he said.

However, family members of the schoolgirl rejected the police report, saying they would file a no-confidence petition with the court.

Tasfia’s mother Naima Khanam claimed her daughter did not commit suicide. "She had no reason to kill herself."

On May 2, ninth-grader Tasfia’s body was found on a concrete block on the sea beach, near the Naval Academy Road, at Patenga. She had gone missing the previous day.

Her father later filed a case at Patenga police station against six people.
