An accused in the murder of a Union Parishad (UP) chairman has been snatched away from a prison van in Satkhira’s Krishna Nagar market area and lynched by the mob.
The incident occurred on Saturday night, said Kaliganj police station’s OC Hasan Hafizur Rahman.
Police arrested UP member Jalil Gain, the prime accused in the murder case of Krishna Nagar union Chairman KM Mosharraf Hossain, in Gazipur’s Kaliakoir on Friday and handed him over to Satkhira’s Kaliganj police the next day, he said.
On Saturday night, the Kaliganj police took Jalil along to the local office of Jubo League, the youth wing of the ruling Awami League, to recover firearms following interrogation.
No sooner had Jalil got down from the prison van, angry locals snatched him away and beat him to death, the OC said.
On September 8, Mosharraf, also Deputy OrganizingSecretary of the opposition Jatiya Party’s district unit, was hacked and then shot dead.
The victim’s daughter filed a case accusing around 40 people, including Jalil, who is also the president of the Union’s Sramik League, an associated wing of the ruling Awami League.
Jalil went into hiding since the incident.
