Road crashes kill 5 in two districts

The covered-van driver and his assistant had fled the scene right after the crash

At least five people were killed and several others injured in separate road accidents in Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong on Wednesday.

In Cox’s Bazar, three people died and four others injured after a collision between a covered-van and a human haulier on Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway near Inani Resort at Chakaria upazila around 11:30am.

Two of the deceased were identified as Taj Uddin, 32, and M Yunus, 37.

Siringa highway police camp In-Charge Nure Alam said that three people were killed on the spot after the collision.

The four injured were rescued and rushed to the Sadar Hospital, he added.

Chakaria police station OC Bakhtiar Uddin, however, said that the death toll could rise as the conditions of the injured were critical.

The covered-van driver and his assistant had fled the scene right after the crash. Police impounded the damaged vehicles later.

In Chittagong, two people were killed and another injured after a head-on collision between two covered-vans on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Mirsarai upazila around 3:30am, reports UNB.

One of the deceased was identified as Kabir Hossain, 40, one of the drivers.

Mirsarai Fire Service and Civil Defence Inspector Rabiul Azam Robin said the collision had killed two people on the spot.
