The two suspected members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), killed in a “gunfight” in Munshiganj’s Srinagar upazila, were involved in the murder of publisher Shahjahan Bachchu, police say.
Md Shamim, alias Kaka alias Boma Shamim, and Ekhlasur Rahman were killed in a reported gunfight with police early on Friday.
Tipped-off, police intercepted two motorbikes near a checkpost on KC Road around 1am on Friday, said Munshiganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Jayedul Alam, at a press conference.
The four people on the motorbikes hurled crude bombs at police and opened fire on them, he said.
The law enforcers fired back, triggering a gunfight.
Two people died on the spot while two managed to flee the scene on a motorbike, the SP said.
He said three policemen were also injured during the shootout and they are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
They are suspected of killing publisher Shahjahan Bachchu, said Munshiganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Jayedul Alam.
Jayedul said the deceased were accused in the killing of Bachchu, owner of Bishaka Prokashoni.
On June 11, assailants shot Bachchu dead in his home town in Munshiganj.
Shamim was the mastermind in the killing, the SP said.
He is also wanted in four robbery cases.
The other deceased, Ekhlasur, stashed the firearms used in the killing, in his rented house, the SP said.
SP Jayedul said police recovered: one pistol, one magazine, three bullets, three knives, and one motorcycle from the scene.
