A gold smuggler has been held with 10 gold bars, weighing 1.17kg and worth Tk52 lakh —during a drive by the Shalkona camp unit of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in the Sharsha upazila of Jessore.

Hasan Ali, 30, was detained around 10:30am Thursday.

BGB 49 Battalion Commander Lt Col Ariful Haque said: “We received a tip-off that a large shipment of gold was to be smuggled into India through the Shalkona border, so we conducted a drive in the village of Amtola Gatipara, during which we detained Hasan.

“The arrestee has been handed over to Sharsha police station along with the gold,” he added.
